Ubuntu Through 9-Year-Old Dylan’s Eyes: A Q&A

Ubuntu Through 9-Year-Old Dylan’s Eyes: A Q&A

Dylan recently visited Ubuntu with his parents, who have been long-time supporters and members of the Ubuntu tribe. Experiencing the community firsthand left a lasting impression on him. In this Q&A, Dylan shares what stood out, what he learned, and how seeing Ubuntu up close changed the way he thinks about community, gratitude, and belonging.

What is one moment from this trip that you think you’ll remember for a long time—and why?

Seeing how much Ubuntu has changed and how all the energy and investment the team and tribe members have made turned it into such a beautiful and warm place. I know it started small and it is so amazing to see what it looks like now versus a long time ago.

What did you notice about how families here support one another?

I just noticed how everyone - regardless of who you are - helped each other. There was no question about why people needed help, it was just about helping and loving each other.

How did it feel to meet kids who live very differently from you? What surprised you most?

I was so amazed by how resilient people are. People who are going through challenges are still showing up and not letting that stand in their way. There was so much joy in the rooms of the school.

What did you learn from the mom we visited about staying hopeful, even when things are hard?

I learned that they put a lot of faith into god and to Ubuntu. The moms are going through so much but they trust in the foundation and the school to put their kids in the best spot and with a future.

What does the word “Ubuntu” mean to you now, after being here?

To me it means hope, joy and togetherness. That is really what I feel being here.

What made you feel grateful today that you might not have noticed before this trip?

I am so grateful that I have air conditioning. :) but also I am grateful for the small things and for the comforts that I have that I don’t even realize I have.

If you could tell one of your friends back home about this experience, what would you want them to understand?

Ubuntu is an amazing community and they are doing great work. They also are creating and making beautiful fashion. I would like them to understand the love and welcoming you get as part of Ubuntu. The hugs are great.
